I work better when I have a plan. I like knowing and seeing what I need to do. I can’t keep ideas/goals in my head like I used. Plus, seeing it in outside my mind ensures I don’t forget what needs to be done.
One area of my writing life that had been plan-less was my blog/website.
I struggled with blogging consistently, what to blog about and the motivation to blog. I wanted to blog, but I was overwhelmed.
So I did some research and found some articles on creating a blog action plan. I took pieces from the articles and came up an action plan format that I used for my blog. And it’s helped me be more focused and less stressed about blogging.
The plan has six parts. Some sections will be easier to fill out than others. If don’t know the answer to something, leave blank and keep going. Then think on it. Be as specific as you can in your answers. Also, the plan can be applied to a blog or website.
a. Why do you blog? (What’s your reasons for blogging?)
b. Who is your audience? (Who do you want to reach, connect with?)
2. FINANCE/OPERATIONAL COSTS
a. How much is it going to cost to start up, revamp and/or maintain your site/blog (hosting, domain, website design, template, stock images, etc)
3. S.M.A.R.T. GOALS
a. What are your short-term goals? (What do you want to accomplish in, let’s say a year? Ex. Post 4 times a month, participate in a blog tour, create/maintain a writing resource page)
b. What are your long-term goals? (Ex. Have site professionally designed, get 25 views a day,
4. OPERATIONAL MODEL
a.Who’s doing what job? (Who’s going to do the blogging? Only you or will the posts be split with guest bloggers and/or blogmates? Who’s going to do site maintence? Fix tech issues? Who’s going to design the site?)
b. When are you going to blog? (How often? Once a week? Twice a day? Whatever you decide on needs to be realistic to your schedule. Can you maintain the schedule?)
5. MARKETING STRATEGY
a. How will you promote your blog/site? (Ex. Facebook, Twitter, email/forum signature, Tumblr, bumper sticker, etc?)
6. CONTENT PLAN
a. What catergoies or topics will you blog about? (Picking categories keeps you focused.
b. What types of content will you post? (Ex. text, video, audio, pictures, how-to, etc. Go here to find a nice list)
