Making a personal manifesto has been on my To Do list for several years. So with 2016 on the horizon and a desire to live more purposely, I decided it was time to make it happen.
I wanted something to not only motivate me, but to also hold me accountable. I did a vision board for 2015 and it was cool to have a visual representation of the things I wanted to accomplish, but the Yeah-I-Can-Do-This high faded few months in. Now that could be partly due to me walking a path that didn’t make me happy.
Anyway, with my manifesto I’m being told actions I need to take in order to make the goals a reality. And it also gives me a way to determine if I’m following the principles or not by asking myself questions like Have I connected with anyone this week? Will taking this step push me out of my comfort zone? Did I hold back when I did X?
To start, I brainstormed words and sayings I want to live by. Short action-y statements my inner voice can whisper (or yell) in a bossy voice when I’m slacking or playing it too safe. I also checked out other manifestos for inspiration and to see how others had set theirs up. There are tons out there to use for inspiration and guides.
I used Power Point because I don’t have any Photoshop skills and I didn’t want to spend a lot of time learning a new program.
Basically, I inserted text boxes, filled them with the words/phrases from my brainstorm list, and outlined the text boxes. Then I played around with font styles and sizes. Moved the text boxes around to see where they fit. I kept tweaking the words/phrases and fine tuning the position and shape of the boxes until I liked how everything looked on the page. Oh. I also added some color for BAM! effect. I did this all over 7-10 days, working on it 10 minute chunks.
I plan to print this out and hang over my desk and another next to my vision board. I think combining the powers of both tools will help accomplish my goals for 2016 and get stuff done.
Have you considered writing a personal manifesto? If you’ve ever written one, I’d love to hear about it.
