Our neighbors gave a box of old celery to give to the chickens. Instead of tossing the bottoms, I decided to try regrowing celery from them. I attempted this a few years ago and had tiny stalks of celery growing, but then a heatwave hit and they died. I couldn’t water them enough to keep them alive. 🙁
So I chopped up the celery in a food processor while watching an episode of a Kdrama (<a rel=”nofollow” href=”http://www.dramafever.com/drama/4101/Rooftop_Prince/” target=”_blank”>Rooftop Prince to be exact). The chickens up gobbled up the celery.
I put all the celery bottoms in the box and headed outside.
I found a spot just outside of the main gardening area, then dug shallow holes to place the celery in.
I walked away to hang out with my kids for a bit and came back to this. See the three displaced celery bottoms? Apparently, a chicken or some chickens decided to go digging in my celery bed.
I’m pretty sure it was Fredrick aka Sterling, the rooster from the second coop. He either acted alone or was trying to impress one of the hens with his food finding skills. Look at him trying to look all innocent.
I saved a few celery bottoms to regrow inside. I forgot to take pics of them. I put little bit of water in the containers, just enough to touch the base of the celery so the celery doesn’t get all mushy from sitting in too much water.
I planted the celery around April 26th. This is how they looked a few days later. Look at that growth! I’m crossing my fingers it continues.
