Normally, I do my writing at my desk. But lately, I’ve been moving around to different parts of the house. Sometimes it’s to get a change of scenery other times it’s so I can be with my family and still be working (For some reason if they can see me they don’t bother as much. If I’m in my room working, they come in and either sit behind me silently or start talking to me.)
At first I thought being around them would be distracting, but it has been. Putting in my earbuds and listening to music helps block out their chatter too. 🙂
For the past couple of weeks I’ve been wanting to write somewhere other than my house because I’ve been getting stuck with my story. Being somewhere totally different does wonders for my muse and brings the plot bunnies hopping. Here are my Top 3 favorite places to write outside my home:
1. Sam’s Club. I don’t know what it is about this place, but when I sit down with my notebook (slice of pizza and Orange Fanta), the words and ideas start flowing.
2. The Library. I used to go to here more often to write. But due to budget cuts, the libraries hours have been significantly reduced. When I do go, I feel like I’m walking into Cheers because the staff is so friendly (I love how they know patrons by name) and fun to talk with. When I’m distracted or stuck, I head here. I leave unstuck and more focused.
3. The Car. I keep a notebook in the car for the times my muse gets chatty. When school’s in session, I do some writing or brainstorming while I’m waiting at the bus stop. Sometimes I arrive home from somewhere and sit in the car in the garage and write longhand. I have no distractions in here and I’m separated from the things I should be doing, like laundry or dishes.
